A life of slothful ease, a life of that peace which springs merely from lack either of desire or of power to strive after great things, is as little worthy of a nation as an individual.
We do not admire the man of timid peace. We admire the man who embodies victorious efforts,
the man who never wrongs his neighbor, who is prompt to help a friend, but who has those virile qualities necessary to win in the stern strife of actual life. It is hard to fail, but it is worse never to he tried to succeed. In this life we get nothing se by effort. Freedom from effort in the present merely meansthat there has been effort stored up in the past. A man can be freed from the necessity of work only by the fact that he or his fathers before him he worked to good purpose. If the freedom thus purchased is used aright, and the man still does actual work, though of a different kind, whether as a writer or a general, whether in the field of politics or in the field of exploration and adventure,
he shows he deserves his good fortune.
But if he treats this period of freedom from the need of actual labor as a period, not of preparation, butof mere enjoyment, even though perhaps not of vicious enjoyment, he shows that he is simply a cumberer on the earth’s surface; and he surely unfits himself to hold his own place with his fellows, if the need to do so should again arise. A mere life of ease is not in the end a very satisfactory life, and, above all, it is a life which ultimately unfits those who follow it for serious work in the world.
As it is with the individual, so it is with the nation. It is a base untruth to say that hy is the nation that has no history. Thrice hy is the nation that has a glorious history. Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twillight that knows neither victory nor defeat.
Why are so many people so anxious to get away from the *** all town or village where they brought up,and to make for the big cities? They usually describe their hometown as "boring" or "dead",or the harshest critici *** of all as"provincial".
If we examine the question from a distance, as if we were viewing the whole country from a long way off, westart to get a clue about what it is that lures us into the big cities.
The main point to notice about big cities is that they are big: there are a lot of people, and there are a lot of things going on. If you look down on a city, literally from a great distance, from an airplane at night, you will be struck by the incredible brightness of a are so many lights that you cannot help feeling that all the bright things of life are down there waiting for you.But a feeling of disointment will set in shortly after you land, because you will discover as you drive into the city center from theairport that the lights are just , miles and miles of street lights and neon signs. They are notin themselves sources of joy and hiness: city lights are not friendly, they are merely lights. In fact, the effect will probably be to make you feel lonely and isolated.
And yet the city lures us, because it is not provincial like the dead little town we he left behind us.“Provincial” is in fact our way of describing not the town but the attitude of the people. In our littletown,we know ***or think we know*** everybody. And what we know about them is that they do not want to go anywhere,or to do anything outside to normal routine of their everyday lives. Unlike us, they he no sense ofadventure,no longing for new experiences or new horizons.
So we look down on them, pity or despise them, pack our bags, and make for the big world which we know is out there, where the bright lights are. Then a curious thing hens. We find a job, make a *** all circle offriends and acquaintances, and move into some cramped acmodation. Gradually we get to know our section of the city, its shops and its people, and for a while, we begin to feel at home. It is *** all enough, our part of the city, for us not to feel lost or anonymous. We, in effect, create another little village for ourselves within the big city. The ultimate irony es when we rent a television set so that we can stay in atnightand watch exactly the same programs that our despised country cousins watch.Soon we too bee “provincial”, and others who live round us will be glad to get up and lee us behind.
All of us ought to be able to brace ourselves for the predictable challenges and setbacks thatcrop up everyday. If we expect that life won’t be perfect, we’ll be able to oid that impulse toquit. But even ifyou are strong enough to persist the obstacle course of life and work, sometimes you will encounter an adverse event that will pletely knock you on your back.
Whether it’s a financial loss, the loss of respect of your peers or loved ones, or some othertraumatic event in your life these major setbacks lee you douing yourself and wondering ifthings can ever changefor the better again.
Adversity hens to all of us, and it hens all the time. Some form of major adversity iseither going to be there or it’s lying in wait just around the corner. To ignore adversity is tosuccumb to the ultimate self-delusion.
But you must recognize that history is full of examples of men and women who achievedgreatness despite facing hurdles so steep that easily could he crashed their spirit and leftthem lying in the dust. Moses was a stutterer, yet he was called on to be the voice of God.Abraham Lincoln overes a difficult childhood, depression, the death of two sons, andconstant ridicule during the Civil War to bee arguably our greatest president ever. HelenKeller made an impact on the world despite being deaf, dumb, and blind from an early age.Franklin Roosevelt had polio.
There are endless examples. These were people who not only looked adversity in the face butlearned valuable lessons about overing difficult circumstances and were able to moveahead.
A professor stood before his class of 20 senior organic biology students, about to hand out the final exam.
"I want to say that it's been a pleasure teaching you this semester. I know you've all worked extremely hard and many of you are off to medical school after summer. So that no one gets their GPA messed up because they might he been celebrating a bit too much this week, anyone who would like to opt out of the final exam today will receive a 'B' for the course."
There was much rejoicing amongst the class as students got up, passed by the professor to thank him and sign out on his offer. As the last taker left the room, the professor looked out over the handful of remaining students and asked, "Any one else? This is your last chance." One final student rose up and took the offer.
The professor closed the door and took attendance of those students remaining. "I'm glad to see you believe in yourself." he said. "You all he 'A' s."
The Athenian and the Theban
An Athenian and a Theban were on the road together, and passed the time in conversation, as is the way of trelers. After discussing a variety of subjects they began to talk about heroes, a topic that tends to be more fertile than edifying. Each of them was lish in his praises of the heroes of his own city, until eventually the Theban asserted that Hercules was the greatest hero who had ever lived on earth, and now occupied a foremost place among the gods; while the Athenian insisted that Theseus was far superior, for his fortune had been in every way supremely blessed, whereas Hercules had at one time been forced to act as a servant. And he gained his point, for he was a very glib fellow, like all Athenians; so that the Theban, who was no match for him in talking; cried at last in some disgust, "All right, he your way; I only hope that, when our heroes are angry with us, Athens may suffer from the anger of Hercules, and Thebes only from that of Theseus."
The Tale of the Sun
A long, long time ago, the earth was in plete darkness. There was no sun, only the moon and some stars. This was before people, when giant animals roamed the earth. They were much bigger than animals today. Dinewan the Emu and Bralagah the Brolga were two such animals.
One day, they were arguing and fighting over some silly little thing. Bralagah got angry and grabbed one of Dinewan's large eggs and hurled it into the sky. It landed on a pile of firewood where the yellow yolk burst into flames. The flames were so bright, that the world was lit up.
One of the good spirits who lived in the sky was watching this and saw how bright and beautiful the world looked. Maybe if a fire was lit everyday, there would always be light.
So the good spirit collected wood every night. When the pile was big enough, his friend, the morning star, would e out to let everyone know that the fire was about to start. But what about anyone sleeping? How would they know that the fire was lit? The good spirit thought about this. Then, somewhere in the distance, came a loud laugh.
Gugurrgaagaa, gugurrgaagaa
The sound of the cackling kookaburra rang out across the earth.
'That's it, that's the noise I want,' The good spirit was jumping up and down with excitement. At last he had found a way to wake the world.
So now, every morning, just as the dawn is breaking, the laugh of Gugurrgaagaa the Kookaburra can be heard all across Australia, bringing in the new day.
It is not difficult to imagine a world short of ambition. It would probably be a kinder world: with out demands, without abrasions, without disointments. People would he time for reflection. Such work as they did would not be for themselves but for the collectivity. Competition would never enter in. conflict would be eliminated, tension become a thing of the past. The stress of creation would be at an end. Art would no longer be troubling, but purely celebratory in its functions. Longevity would be increased, for fewer people would die of heart attack or stroke caused by tumultuous endeor. Anxiety would be extinct. Time would stretch on and on, with ambition long departed from the human heart.
Ah, how unrelieved boring life would be!
There is a strong view that holds that success is a myth, and ambition therefore a sham. Does this mean that success does not really exist? That achievement is at bottom empty? That the efforts of men and women are of no significance alongside the force of movements and events now not all success, obviously, is worth esteeming, nor all ambition worth cultivating. Which are and which are not is something one soon enough learns on one’s own. But even the most cynical secretly admit that success exists; that achievement counts for a great deal; and that the true myth is that the actions of men and women are useless. To believe otherwise is to take on a point of view that is likely to be deranging. It is, in its implications, to remove all motives for competence, interest in attainment, and regard for posterity.
We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not choose our historical epoch, the country of our birth, or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing. We do not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time or conditions of our death. But within all this realm of choicelessness, we do choose how we shall live: courageously or in cowardice, honorably or dishonorably, with purpose or in drift. We decide what is important and what is trivial in life. We decide that what makes us significant is either what we do or what we refuse to do. But no matter how indifferent the universe may be to our choices and decisions, these choices and decisions are ours to make. We decide. We choose. And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about.

Somewhere Else
by Matthew Shenoda
It is here on this ridge
exposed to the orange dusk
of mountain autumn
that the story begins.
Buck wood for the stove
feel the heat of shoulder to tendon
greet the mule deer
and water the garden again.
In rhythm, with song
when the ax begins to blend with wind
carry on to warmer days
on the river's open banks
where the fervor of healing is found in water.
Flow from one origin to another——
there is never a place where we cannot begin
where the current is ancient, the wind is young
teaching each other like the ax and the wood.
Carve a place for dignity
plant a seed and pray for rain
for sun
for understanding outside your self.
There will e a day when they say:
who do you think you are
and another day will e
for you to tell.
On that day the story will ear
but do not tell of yourself
tell the story of the staff that blossomed in the desert
or the one about your enemy's greatest victory
tell the story of somewhere else
somewhere i he never trelled, gladly beyond
by E. E. Cummings
somewhere i he never trelled, gladly beyond
any experience, your eyes he their silence:
in your most frail gesture are things which enclose me,
or which i cannot touch because they are too near
your slightest look will easily unclose me
though i he closed myself as fingers,
you open always petal by petal myself as Spring opens
touching skilfully,mysteriouslyher first rose
or if your wish be to close me, i and
my life will shut very beautifully ,suddenly,
as when the heart of this flower imagines
the snow carefully everywhere descending;
nothing which we are to perceive in this world equals
the power of your intense fragility:whose texture
pels me with the color of its countries,
rendering death and forever with each breathing
i do not know what it is about you that closes
and opens;only something in me understands
the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses
nobody, not even the rain, has such *** all hands
Silence Ringby Clayton Eshleman
Patters, paters, Apollo globes, sound
breaking up with silence, coals
I can still hear, entanglement of sense pools,
the way a ce might leak perfume——
in the Cro-Magnons went, along its wet hide walls,
as if a flower in, way in, drew their leggy
panspermatic bodies, spidering over
bottomless hunches, groping toward Persephone's fate:
to be quicksanded by the fungus pulp of Hades' purple hair
exploding in their brains.
They poured their foreheads into the coals and corrals
zigzagged about in the night air——
the animals led in crossed
a massive vulva incised before the gate,
the power that came up from it was paradise, the power
the Cro-Magnons bequeathed to us:
to make an altar of our throats.
The first words were mixed with animal fat,
wounded men tried to say who did it.
The group was the rim of a to-be-invented wheel,
their speech was spokes, looping over,
around, the hub of the fire, its silk of us,
its burn of them, bop we dip, you dip,
we dip to you, you will dip to us, Dionysus
the plopping, pooling words, stirred
by the lyre gaps between the peaks of flame,
water to fire, us to them.
Foal-eyes, rubbery, they looped
back into those ces whose walls could be strung
between their teeth, the sticky soul material pulled to
The sides by their hands, ooh
what bone looms they sewed themselves into, ah
what tiny male spiders they were
on the enormous capable of devouring them
female rock elastic word!
